When it comes to passport issuance in Bangladesh the police verification stage is a critical security component. When applying for a new passport or a reissue, current requirements require police verification. In other cases, police verification is not required, albeit this depends on the application and existing papers.

To begin with, there are three main types of police verification:

  1. Prior to the issuance of the passport: Pre-Police Inspection
  2. Following the issuance of the passport: Verification by the police
  3. There is no police verification.

What is Pre Police Verification Basis for Passport

charge of the applicant’s domicile. An officer verifies the information provided on the application form, including the applicant’s name, age, and address. This is done in person at the applicant’s home address. If the information is correct, the police station contacts the passport office, which issues the applicant’s passport.

What is Post Police Verification for Passport?

While pre-passport-issue police verification is the most prevalent, police verification after the passport has been issued is also feasible. In this scenario, the applicant’s passport has already been issued, and the verification process is now over.

Police verification is no longer required if the applicant files the renewal application before his or her current passport expires, according to new policies. Furthermore, the applicant’s previous police verification should be clear, and no criminal accusations should have been brought against him.

No Police Verification for Fresh Passport

Employees of the government, PSUs and statutory bodies, for example, who apply for a passport by submitting a “identity certificate” as annexure “B” (together with their application materials) will receive their passport without having to go through police verification.

If they produce their identification certificate via annexure “B,” applicants with diplomatic or official passports will be spared from police verification when applying for an ordinary passport.

Post Police Verification with Aadhaar

The MEA has authorized post-police verification check for passport applications upon presentation of particular facts to aid in a more efficient verification procedure. This function is open to applicants who present their Aadhaar, voter ID card, or PAN card together with an affidavit (Annexure E). Applicants

facing criminal charges are not eligible for our service. Applicants who submit their Aadhaar as proof of identification will be issued a passport as soon as the Aadhaar is confirmed if all other documentation is correct.

How to Check Police Verification Status for Passport?

The police provide several statuses for police verifications completed when you apply for one.

The following are the several types of verification statuses:

  • Clear – implies that the police have discovered no cause for concern and that the applicant has a clean background (no ongoing criminal charges).
    This status indicates that the police discovered anomalies in the information provided by the applicant during their
  • verification- resulting in the passport being withheld or revoked. The applicant may have provided an erroneous or fake address in their application, resulting in these anomalies. Another reason could be that the applicant is facing criminal charges that are now pending in a court of law.
  • Incomplete– This status indicates that the police discovered the documents supplied to be incomplete during the verification procedure, halting the process in its middle. Another possibility is that the police station did not correctly complete the verification report. When an applicant has not lived at his or her current address for a long time and verification from past addresses is not available, the police may label the verification incomplete due to a lack of sufficient information.
  • A report is written when the police verification is completed, and the passport can be cancelled or accepted based on it. If the passport is not sanctioned due to a “Adverse” or “Incomplete” remark on the verification report, the applicant can attend the police station that issued the report and inquire about the basis for the report.

Adverse Police Verification for Passport

If your passport has been delayed because the PV is “adverse,” here’s what might have happened:

There have been instances where a police officer arrived for verification when you were temporarily unavailable, and these situations can be remedied by writing to the RPO with your file number and seeking a re-verification.

Police Verification Incomplete Passport

If your passport has been delayed or denied because of a “Incomplete” PV report, it could be for one of the following reasons:

  • If you’ve just been at your current address for a year or less,

Exceptions for Police Verification

  • Reissue if your passport is lost, misplaced, or stolen.

The PO will dispatch the passport within one working day of the application date under the Tatkal program.

4. Is it needed for senior citizen candidates above the age of 65 to submit any documents for police verification?

In normal circumstances, the passport will only be issued after police verification. If the senior citizen applicant can present a copy of his or her child’s (over 18-year-old) passport with a page specifying the senior citizen applicant’s name, or if the passport application is made through the Tatkal program, the passport can be issued on the same day.

5. Is police verification required for employees of the government, public sector, or statutory bodies?
Passports will be provided on a pre-police verification basis for ordinary applications and applications linked with the Prior Intimation Letter (via Annexure “N”) filed by Government / PSU / Statutory Body workers.

These applicants must also submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) via Annexure “M” in order to receive a passport. The applicant must additionally provide his or her authentic Identity Certificate through Annexure “B” in order for a passport to be issued without police verification.

6. In the case of a minor, is police verification (PV) required?
No, no PV is required for minors under the age of 18 if their parents have a valid passport. The minor’s passport must clearly state their parents’ names. The Annexure-D form, which has the consent of the

parents allowing the minor to have a passport, must be submitted. In such cases, the validity is limited to 5 years. Children aged 15 to 18 years old, on the other hand, can apply for a pre-PV passport with a 10-year validity. The passport office, however, makes the final decision on the granting of passports to minors.
